Al Mozaico Flamenco Dance Academy offers 4 technique/choreography levels --- Introduction, Beginner, Intermediate & Advanced - and also Por Fiesta Masterclasses. Scroll down to read Class Descriptions.
Please note that we have two locations for flamenco dance lessons. Classes by Kasandra La China, Andrea & Cyrena are held at our regular studio at Hastings Dance Studio (HDS), 828 E. Hastings Street between Hawks and Campbell in Vancouver. NEW! Starting Fall 2008, Oscar Nieto will be teaching at the Vancouver Tap Dance Society (VTDS), 2775 E. Hastings Street which is located 2 blocks west of the PNE grounds.

Introduction

This is a first level Introduction class for students that
are new to flamenco. No previous knowledge of flamenco dance
or music is required. This class will introduce students to
the basic rhythms and dance forms of flamenco. The course
introduces fundamental flamenco dance techniques including
braceo (arms), floreo (fingers), posture (torso) and zapateado
(footwork). The basic goal is coordination of movement. Secondly,
it is also an integrated music class whereby students learn
palmas (handclapping) rhythms for different songs and jaleo
(shouts of encouragement). Students will obtain proper ear
training to listen to the music and song forms.

Beginner
The Beginner level is a technique class is intended for students
with some flamenco training in Introduction classes. The class
will contain technical exercises for footwork, flamenco turns,
posture, flamenco body posture, movement and coordination.
The class focuses on fundamental flamenco dance techniques
including braceo (arms), floreo (fingers), posture (torso)
and zapateado (footwork). Secondly, it is also an integrated
music class whereby students learn palmas (handclapping) rhythms
for different songs and jaleo (shouts of encouragement). Students
will obtain proper ear training to listen to the music. Various
choreographies are taught throughout the year, so please contact

Intermediate
Intermediate level is a technique class that focuses on
strengthening of zapteado (footwork), improving overall technique
and learning more complex choreographies. Students will explore
different flamenco styles, the creation of movement, and traditional
versus contemporary flamenco. Various choreographies are taught
throughout the year, so please contact the instructor for
more information. Each class has exercises for zapateado (footwork),
vueltas (turns) and marcaje (marking steps).

Advanced
Advanced is a technique class is for students with mastery over basic skills and strong flamenco
foundation. The course focuses on strengthening of zapteado
(footwork), improving overall technique and learning complex,
lengthy choreographies. Students will explore different flamenco
styles, the creation of movement, and traditional versus contemporary
flamenco. Various choreographies are taught throughout the
year, so please contact the instructor for more information.

Estilo de Mujer/Advanced
Estilo de Mujer is a technique class that addresses flamenco
dance styles for women, intended for upper intermediate and
advanced students with a strong flamenco foundation. The class
focuses on styles and expression pertaining to women. Each
choreography is unique and explores a specific style of dance.
Exercises include marcaje (marking steps) that involve hips,
torso, spine and arm movements. Students will explore different
flamenco styles, the creation of movement, and traditional
versus contemporary flamenco. Various choreographies are taught
throughout the year, so please contact the instructor for

Bata de Cola
Bata de Cola is a skirt with an elegant long train with multiple
ruffles trailing behind the dancer. Students will learn the
fundamentals of dancing with the bata de cola in the traditional
Sevillan style. The focus is to build a strong technical foundation
to wield the bata de cola, but also to dance with grace and
femininity, and explore style and expression. Exercises include
marcaje (marking steps) that involve hips, torso, arm movements
and floreo. Various choreographies are taught throughout the
year. Dancers of all levels may join but you must have a bata
de cola.

Neoclassical (castanets)
Neoclassical is a branch of Spanish Dance that adheres to flamenco and ballet lines while playing the castanets. Students will learn the
fundamentals of dancing with the castanets with Oscar Nieto. Classes will include castanet exercises for finger dexterity and also integrate with dance movement. Various choreographies are taught throughout the
year.

Bulerias por Fiesta
Learn to dance Bulerias Por Fiesta! For some real Jerezano
ambience, this beginner bulerias class introduces basic bulerias
choreography, explains the structure ands exposes students
to working with live musicians. No previous experience dancing
bulerias or 12 time signature is required but it is helpful.
The objective is to understand the rhythm, music and structure
of bulerias, and improvise using simple steps. This is an
integrated music, rhythm, theory and dance class. Live musicians will be used in classes. Students will do palmas
(hand-clapping), jaleo (shouts of encouragement) and earn
to dance in compas (in time).

Tangos Por Fiesta
Learn to dance Tangos Por Fiesta! This class is for beginner students of flamenco. The objective is to understand the rhythm/
music/structure, dance in compas (in time) and improvise using
simple steps. This is an integrated music, theory and dance
class. CDs and live musicians will be used in classes. Students
will also learn to participate in other ways besides dancing.
They will do palmas (hand-clapping) and jaleo (shouts of encouragement).

DETAILS
- Cash or cheques are accepted. Cheques should be written to "Al Mozaico Flamenco Dance Academy". All fees include 5% GST and live musician fees.
- For students opting to pay for the Course Tuition, any missed classes can be made up in Open Technique classes or Por Fiesta classes during the term.
- Flexible class cards are a convenient, pay-as-you-go solution that must be used within a specific time frame.
- 8 Class Cards must be used in 10 weeks.
- 28 Class Cards must be used in 16 weeks.
There are no refunds on any unused portion of class cards. Credits are non-transferable and cannot be transferred from student to student.
