Al Mozaico Flamenco Dance Academy

Children's Scholarship & Cajon Program 2008

~ Sponsored by Edie Hats Inc. ~

Cajon Program 2008

Al Mozaico Flamenco Dance Academy is pleased to launch our first Cajon Percussion Program for Children aged 5 to 12.  This is made possible by the generous sponsorship Edie Hats Inc. , who donated ten cajons for the school for this project!

Check out Edie's uTube video of the kids performance at Fiesta de Invierno 2007!

What is a cajon?  It is the flamenco drum box!  Read this blog.

Cyrena Huang, Children's Instructor, will be integrating Cajon and Percussion into the chlidren's dance class the January to May term with Andrew Klukas, Cajon Instructor.  This will create opportunities to study Compas.  "Compas" is important in Flamenco and is a term we use loosely to mean "time signature", "tempo" and "keep time".  It is impossible to be a flamenco dancer without having good compas, so we will take careful measures to teach our children good compas!

Thank you to Edie Hats!

Al Mozaico Flamenco Dance Academy would like to thank Edie Hats for its continued support of our educational program and generous donation.  In the past, Edie Orenstein has greatly supported our professional dance company, Mozaico Flamenco Dance Theatre, and our artistic initiatives.  Now, she is taking part to support our educational school programs.

Edie Orenstein, a self-described learning addict, is insatiably curious, interested and fascinated with everything she encounters.  She has been particularly enamored with Flamenco as far back as she can remember.

I grew up with the negative notion that I was someone with learning disabilities.  Today I have overcome those challenges and passionately believe that all people, not just myself, learn differently.  Independent education and the availability of varied choices for children became a crusade for me when I had my own children.  I strongly believe that children should be positively nurtured in their development.

When I first started studying at Al Mozaico Flamenco Dance Academy I was deeply impressed and overjoyed by Kasandra and Oscar Nieto’s respectful and knowledgeable approach to sharing their experience.  I found their various teaching methods to be in tune with my own personal beliefs.  Therefore, it is an honor to have come to a place in my life, with the business I have built for 30 years, that I can support their school in providing choices for kids in a tangible way.”

Edie Hats has a legendary reputation for being the premiere hat retailer in North America.   Located in the Net Loft on Granville Island, it is cited as Vancouver's Favourite Hat Store!  Drawing loyal customers from all over the world, its mission is to create a memorable experience embracing fantasy, sensuality & richness that inspires unlimited possibilities.  The store also sells Flamenco shoes, mantones (shawls), picos (scarves), combs, fans and much more!
