Our Story
Mozaico Flamenco has been a moving force in the world of Spanish dance for over 30 years, continuously pushing the outer edges of the artistic envelope, fusing dance, music and culture.
“Crackling hand claps, exploding heel beats, swirling flounces . . . ”
In 1972, Oscar Nieto created Mozaico de Danzas in Los Angeles, California. This ensemble performed a “mosaic” of Spanish Dances including classical, neo-classical, regional and flamenco. The group created a splash with its innovative choreographies, colourful costumes and blend of new sounds. In 1983, Oscar created Mozaico Flamenco in Vancouver, British Columbia. Far ahead of its time, he incorporated flamenco with heretical instruments such as electric guitar, base, congas and the cora, which are now currently used in flamenco music.
“. . . one of the most original and captivating artistic groups to appear in Canada for years!”
Since 2002, Mozaico Flamenco Dance Theatre has produced professional, engaging, artistic shows for Canadian audiences that promote flamenco as an art form. It has a reputation among local fans for producing performances of rare versatility, polish and exuberance.
The company has performed with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and Vancouver Opera, and has appeared at countless venues including the Vancouver East Cultural Theatre, Norman Rothstein Theatre, Orpheum Theatre, Vancouver Playhouse, Arts Club Revue Theatre, Vanier Hall, Cowichan Theatre, Newcombe Theatre, Tidemark Centre, Canada Pavilion, Canada Place, Expo 86 and the Pacific National Exhibition.
Our theatrical shows have included “Espiritu Sin Nombre“, “Poemas de Alegrias“, “Cafe de Chinitas“, “Flamenco Around The Map: Andalucia” and “Flamenco Around The Map: De Ida Y Vuelta“.
The demand for Mozaico Flamenco continues to grow. It is a demand for stunning performances of traditional and contemporary flamenco, yet also for the striking originality of Mozaico Flamenco’s extension of the art through fusion of Latin Jazz, Cuban rhythms, Asian themes and pushing the edges of the envelope. Ravishing costumes, breathtaking virtuosity, evocative vocalizing, electrifying footwork…audiences are mesmerized from the beginning and left jubilant at the end. Spellbinding!
Sunday Salon Series
Mozaico Flamenco launched the intimate Sunday Salon Series in 2022 to gather performers and audience together in a close encounter of fiery cuadro flamenco. Flamenco is a vibrant art form that lives on audience interaction in the form of handclapping and shouts, OLE! Thanks to the BC Arts Council, the Sunday Salon Series created 17 shows and 47 new songs and dances within 11 months, featuring dozens of performers. Celebrate this wonderful event with Mozaico Flamenco as we continue this amazing series today, celebrating passionate flamenco song, music & dances.
Act 1 starts at 7:30pm. 45-50 minutes professional show, followed by a Question and Answer period over wine for $5, so the audience can meet the artists.
Act 2 starts at 8:30pm and continues in a community circle, like the tablaos in the caves of Sacromonte, Granada.
We encourage everyone to get dressed up in flamenco flamboyance to celebrate, whether that is a flower in the hair or polka-dot dress, but if you have neither, just come with your voice and clapping hands.

The Fire Horse in the Chinese Zodiac is known for being wild, passionate, charismatic, courageous, with a thirst for action, adventure, innovation and is highly volatile. Sounds exciting just like Flamenco!
Experience the passion and energy of Flamenco through mesmerizing flamenco rhythms, fierce footwork, and soulful guitar up close and personal, at the intimate Anne MacDonald Studio in North Vancouver at the Presentation House. This fiery show is perfect for flamenco afficionados and newcomers alike. Let’s bring in the new year together, feel the beat and spark your spirit!
Mozaico Flamenco’s performance “Year of the Fire Horse” celebrates famed songs by flamenco’s favourite poet, Federico Garcia Lorca — “Zorongo”, “Anda Jaleo” and “Cafe de Chinitas”. Our dancers will perform most epic of the deep profound dances including the fiery Seguiriyas by Kara “La Picante”, the smoldering Tarantos by Kasandra “La China” and the ethereal Peteneras by Amber Rowell in the bata de cola with guitarist Peter Mole and the mulitalented Cyrena “La Sirena”, singer and flamenco cellist. Immerse yourself in our wonderous flamenco cave with surround sound and enjoy the rich, authentic expression of our artists through the vibrant art of Flamenco.
As “Mozaico” means “mosaic”, we have some multicultural, community surprises by “Los Mozaicos” dancers with Spanish fans & Chinese silks in Colombianas, Baton and Baston Farruca and some words of wisdom by our octogenarian grandma, Sharon Quan, and Tango de Malaga with our teenager apprentice guitarist, The Jaz.
Enjoy two sets starting 7pm, intermission and second set at 8:15pm.
